Outstanding 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition performance footage
This film starts out in San Francisco with a great shot of the Golden Gate Bridge, and then a very nice shot of a ferry boat approaching. Slowly, Treasure Island comes into view, and soon, we're on the island, at the world's fair, taking in all the colourful splendour and the architecture.
There's a shot of the Folie Bergere from the outside, and then some sensational crowd shot footage inside, though it is black and white. It's very rare to see performances like this at the Golden Gate International Exposition. I presume it was also shot by Albert Armor?
There's a nice shot of a Pan-Am Clipper flying boat plane taking off from the water, and then we're back at the fair. The crowds are surprisingly sparse, and I wonder if it was early or late in the fair?
There is a surprising appearance of some completely nude ladies posing, three models from one of the "attractions" on the Gayway, either Candid Camera or Greenwich Village (a “Model artists’ colony and revue theatre") as well as a wheeled cart or chair promoting Sally Rand's appearance at a show called Gay Paree (there was also a Cafe Gay Paree at the fair). For a split second, I believe that's Sally Rand who appears behind a curved glass display area (fully clothed), unless I have her confused with another attraction. I think she may have done a kind of fan dance behind this glass window (not visible here).
Half way through the film, there's a title slide for the 50th Anniversary of the Duke Tournament of Roses, 1939, followed by parade shots of various floats and participants. At the tail end of this footage, you can see all the debris left behind after the parade. The next segment includes the football game at the Rose Bowl, a bit underexposed.
According to
tournamentofroses.com, "USC beats Duke, 7-3, with a famous come-from-behind touchdown drive as fourth-string quarterback Doyle Nave and second- string end 'Antelope Al' Kreuger combine for four completed passes and a final 19-yard touchdown pass as time runs out. The first telecast of a special event from the Tournament of Roses took place on station W6XAO of Los Angeles, with commentator Don Lee describing the January 1 evening preparations of the Royal Court. Parade and game held on Jan. 2."
Then, there's a brief shot of some neon lights at night of the Corcoran Theatre, in Corcoran, California. Finally, it's a Christmas tree from 1939! All around, a great film!
